Things to consider when creating your street pole banners

Street pole banners are one of our favourite things to print for our clients, and we love seeing them displayed across the city. They are an excellent way to get noticed, spread the word, celebrate, and raise awareness.

But not all street pole banners are created equally. There are definitely some that are more successful than others.

Here are a few things to consider when creating your street pole banners.

Smart design

When designing the graphic for the banners, think about the angle that people will be seeing them from — usually from down below and often from the road. You want the message to be bright and clear, but not too distracting that you’ll cause an accident. People shouldn’t have to decipher what you are trying to say, the information should be transferred almost instantaneously. That means clear graphics, bright colours, and limited text.

Right height

Some street pole banners are ready for you to bring your own designs to, but lots of businesses are getting in on the action and creating their own versions for their commercial enterprises. If this is the case, it’s important to hang the banners at the right height (not too high, and not too low) and have the banners big enough to see.

Durable hardware

If you are erecting your own street pole banner, consider investing in some durable hardware that will withstand the weather. If you live in a city like Vancouver, you will want something strong to last against the rain, wind, sun, and snow. The same goes for the material of the banner, you don’t want it to tear in the wind or fade in the sun.

Get creative

The great thing about street pole banners is that the sky is the limit when it comes to design and placement. Of course, you may need to consult your city bylaws to see if there are restrictions to where and how you can advertise. But in terms of creativity, you can do so much with this concept. You can switch up the shape and the style to convey the message you want.

Be a part of the community

One of the great things about street pole banners is that they have become an integrated part of the city’s visual landscape. You see them going across bridges and throughout neighbourhoods, so think of your messaging as added something to the vibrancy of a community.

Know your audience

Choose your neighbourhood depending on what you are looking to display. All too often, great graphics get lost on people who are not interested in looking at them. If you are celebrating an organizational milestone or advertising an upcoming event, consider carefully where you are placing the street pole banners. Of course you want lots of traffic going by, but make especially sure that traffic will take notice.
